Biography
Jiří Voženílek was a Czech architect, urban planner, and university educator. He was born on August 14, 1909, in Holešov, into a family of a gymnasium professor. He studied at a gymnasium in Prague, where he also studied architecture at the Czech Technical University. In the 1960s, he became a university professor at this school and also the chief architect of the capital city of Prague. He joined the Baťa company on April 20, 1937. His first job was to assist the then Roman Catholic church project in Otrokovice with the Baťa architect Vladimír Karfík. Later, he became the head of Group No. 276 of Construction Department No. 8 and was the leading designer. For the Baťa company, he collaborated with architect Jaroslav Fragner in creating the urban concept of the Industrial City of Kolín from 1940–41. He himself designed an interesting industrial building, a rendering plant, in Otrokovice-Baťa. Among his other architectural realizations, the most well-known in the area of the former Baťa factories in Zlín are factory buildings No. 14 and 15, which were built in 1946–47 (No. 15) and 1947–48 (No. 14). However, Jiří Voženílek's most significant realization is the Collective House in Zlín. He is the author of many significant urban projects both in our country and worldwide. He led a group of architects who created the Regulatory Plan for Zlín in 1946–47, which is essentially still valid today.
