1984 - graduated in architecture from the Unité Pédagogique d'Archilecture de Bardeaux, interned at the studio of Sérgio Bernardes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
since 1984 - collaborated with architect Manuel Fernandes de Sá on the urban planning of the cities of Santa Maria da Feira and Vale de Cambra
since 1989 - founded his own practice, Atelier d'Arquitectura J. A. Lopes da Costa, Lda., in Ovar, Portugal.
Developed projects in Portugal, Italy, Mozambique, Angola, and other countries.
2006-11 - was a member of the leadership of NAAV (Chamber of Architects in Aveiro)
