Karla Szyszkowitz-Kowalski is an Austrian architect who was born in Upper Silesia. She studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt. During her studies, she worked at the Parisian studio of Candilis, Josic & Woods. In 1968, she completed her postgraduate studies at the Architectural Association in London. From 1969 to 1971, she worked at the Munich studio of Günter Behnisch, where she participated in the planning of the Olympic complex. In Munich, she met her future husband, Michael Szyszkowitz, who was also involved in the Olympic project, but at the studio of Domenig & Huth. Since 1973, she has collaborated with Michael Szyszkowitz, with whom she founded the architectural office Szyszkowitz-Kowalski in Graz in 1978. From 1971 to 1972, she taught at the university in Kassel, Germany. In 1988, she was appointed director of the Institute of Civil Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, a position she held until 2003. Since 1993, she has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1998, she became a member of the International Academy of Architecture in Sofia, Bulgaria.
