Biography
Marcio Kogan is a Brazilian architect and filmmaker. His father was engineer and designer Aron Kogan (1924-1961), who designed several skyscrapers in São Paulo in the 1950s and 60s. He graduated in architecture from Mackenzie Presbyterian University in 1976. Together with his classmate Isay Weinfeld, he directed thirteen short films between 1973 and 1979. In 1988, they made the feature film Fire and Passion, and from 1995 to 2004, they jointly organized five architectural exhibitions. Concurrently, since 1977, he has led an architectural practice that was renamed Studio MK27 in 2001 and has made an impact on the international scene in Peru, Uruguay, Chile, the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, India, Israel, and Indonesia. In 2012, Studio MK27 was selected to represent Brazil at the Venice Architecture Biennale, where it exhibited in the national pavilion, curated by Lauro Cavalcanti, alongside the installation of Lúcia Costa. In 2011, Kogan was appointed an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2013, New York Times critic Paul Goldberger cited him as one of the main examples of contemporary Brazilian architecture. In addition to his own practice, he also teaches at the Escola da Cidade and at the Polytechnic University of Milan. His son Gabriel Kogan is also an architect and architecture critic.
