Biography
Maria José Marques da Silva Martins was a Portuguese architect and the daughter of architect José Marques da Silva. In 1943, she graduated in architecture from the School of Fine Arts (FAUP) in Porto, becoming the first graduate of this school. She then began working in her father's office, where she met architect and urban planner David Moreira da Silva (1909-2002), whom she married in 1943, and together they led an architectural office in Porto (1941-96). Their office produced extensive urban plans while also completing projects initiated by Marques da Silva. In the 1970s, the couple moved to the Barcelos area to focus on agriculture while also honoring the legacy of Maria's father. In 1996, the José Marques da Silva Institute (FIMS) was established at FAUP, which transformed into a private foundation in 2009.
