Biography
Sérgio Wladimir Bernardes, along with Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, was a representative of modern Brazilian architecture. He completed his studies in 1948 and gained renown for his villas in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, one of which (Casa Hélio Cabral) earned him the main prize at the Venice Biennale in 1954. Bernardes's work is characterized by the use of local materials, the incorporation of nature, and natural light. His passion for nature awakened an interest in the ecological dimension of large cities, and in 1979 he founded the Laboratory for Conceptual Research, where he designed a series of spiral towers on the outskirts of Rio to halt the city's expansion and the subsequent destruction of his country's coastal landscape.
