He studied architecture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Clemens Holzmeister and since 1956 worked as an independent architect. He was an honorary member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus and in 1997 received the Upper Austrian Cultural Award.
Austrian architect Viktor Hufnagl was a pioneer of a new typology of school and residential buildings, understanding his profession as a socially and politically significant mission.
