Biography
Zdeněk Štefka graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno. He became acquainted with exhibition practice during his student internships at trade fairs in Brno. Shortly after graduating from the Brno faculty, he won a competition for the position of architect at the newly established organization Olomoucké výstavní sady, later known as Flora. From 1967 to 1980, he was the chief architect of the international flower exhibitions Flora Olomouc and simultaneously the head of exhibition activity design and horticultural design. He significantly contributed to the prestige of these exhibitions. Thanks to him, the Flora Olomouc exhibit has a high reputation among professionals both domestically and abroad.
For his realized exhibitions, Mr. Štefka has received numerous awards not only at home. In 1972, at the age of thirty, he received his first significant international award: he was presented with a gold medal for the exhibit Symphony of Glass and Flowers from Czechoslovakia at the Floriade 72 Amsterdam exhibition by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. It was then that he first used glass and glass forms as a dominant artistic accent in floral arrangements. This combination has since enchanted visitors to Flora Olomouc many times.
In the 1970s, he played a fundamental role in expanding the Olomouc exhibition grounds and cultivating the greenery of Bezručovy sady in Olomouc. At that time, he was a prominent authorial figure in many international exhibitions and fairs in Europe, Asia, and America. From 1974 to 1979, he pursued his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT in Prague.
In the 1980s, he served on the commission for interior design and exhibition design within the Union of Czech Architects. From 1982 to 1988, he taught part-time at the Department of Architecture at AVU in Prague.
From 2001 to 2003, he served as president of the Union of Visual Artists of Olomouc. From 2003 to 2012, he was the director of the Flora Olomouc Exhibition Grounds. In 2011, he received the title of Personality of the Czech Exhibition Industry, awarded by the community of organizers of exhibition events in the Czech Republic SOVA ČR, for his long-standing creative architectural and artistic activity in the field of exhibition design and for his conceptual organizational work in the implementation of horticultural exhibitions.
