Biography
Alois Wachsman was a Czech painter, scenographer, and architect. He came from an artistic family; his father was a dentist. His great-uncle was the painter Bedřich Wachsmann, his uncles were painter Prof. Bedřich Wachsmann Jr. (1871-1944), Austrian painter and composer Prof. Julius Wachsmann, literary critic and translator Arnošt Procházka, and his aunt was the Austrian enamel painter Rosa Wachsmann. His cousin was Jiří Voskovec and his niece was actress Anna Pitašová. From 1917 to 1922, he studied architecture at the Prague Polytechnic under professors J. Fanta and A. Engel. In 1920, he was one of the founders of the group Devětsil and from 1925 to 1928, he studied architecture with Josef Gočár at the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1923, he was a member of the Association of Fine Artists Mánes and in 1937, he lived in Dvůr Králové.
As a painter, he was initially strongly influenced by French Cubism; later his paintings approached Surrealism, yet with very personal poetic moods. Towards the end of his life, he painted almost realistic works with religious themes, again characterized by his unique poetry. He also worked as an illustrator and theatrical architect for both the Liberated Theater and the National Theater. From 1927 to 1930, he collaborated with Josef Gočár on the design of the St. Wenceslas Church in Vršovice, Prague.
