Cafe Baryk, located in Bratislava’s quarter also known as Radiohood due to its proximity to the Slovak Radio building, is located on the ground floor of an apartment building in a compact urban development. The assignment was to create a space for local customers - regulars, residents of this neighborhood. At the same time, focus on a wide clientele, from children to whom there is a dedicated children’s corner to late visitors after work.
The basic concept was to create a simple clean space that works with the original elements of the space and complements them with new elements in its characteristic materiality. We cleaned the space and unified the surfaces with sprayed plaster, the original concrete floor of the cafe was sanded to reveal the typical river gravel. We extended the original staircase for use to the entire width of the space and thus created an elevated seating area lined with beige terracotta tiles. The bar becomes the dominant interior element of the space, its materiality following the original glass concrete walls, which we have preserved in the space. The gray range of materials - sprayed plaster, polished concrete floor, stainless steel bar and furniture elements - is disturbed by colored accents in the form of original ceiling lights and a load bearing beam. Here, we deliberately work with shades of paint used in the insulation of panel houses and look for new uses for interior applications. The choice of furniture also fell on traditional outdoor furniture, which, however, is used indoors due to its materiality and durability. The overall atmosphere of the space is complemented by a wall installation by Emil Taška and a method of lighting composed of several indirect sources.
