Apartment on Biskupcova Street in Prague

Apartment on Biskupcova Street in Prague
Architect: Jan Klempíř
Address: Biskupcova, Žižkov, Prague, Czech Republic
Completion:2009

It should be noted from the outset that the layout of the apartment remains original. The arrangement of rooms and their orientation to light was suitable for both me and the owners, and underwent only very minor adjustments: the street-side rooms connected to the terrace were linked by new doors (the bedroom thereby directly connects, merging with the current study, the future children's room - a suitable solution for the coming years). The partition separating the bathroom and toilet from the hallway was slightly shifted, therefore widening the passage between the living kitchen and the bedroom. The entry to the kitchen from the hallway received new configurations.
From a typological perspective, the arrangement of the living kitchen might be considered a slight experiment. The kitchen table is slightly elevated (to the height of older tables, thus with the necessary trestle), complemented by a cooker by the window and chairs in the remaining part of the table (the old chairs are missing in the photographs; the owners brought them later).
The only other space expanding the social area of the apartment is the hallway, furnished as a library (which is functionally possible due to the existence of the original spacious wardrobe, which is accessible from it). The view between these two spaces was therefore enhanced (if one can call it that, the door and its lintel were removed).
For some time now, I have had the feeling that perceiving architecture through photographs is often misleading in very significant aspects.
I find it striking that none of the photographs taken show the terrace. From the terrace, there is an extraordinary view (the apartment is on the top floor), it is spacious, and it is one of the main reasons why the owners decided to buy the apartment. However, the terrace will be adjusted only when the facades of the house are repaired, which could be a long time. From the standpoint of documenting the work done, there is nothing to record about it. Regardless, it is already a functioning focal point of the bedroom and the room, a reason why, when passing from the more social part to the more private one, the dead-end sight doesn’t deter the gaze; on the contrary, the view opens up to another, increasingly popular space.
