The bent apartment building MAMAPAPA in the Bratislava housing estate of Dúbravka brings a new typological and typographic architectural program to the beloved location. The composition of two design-differentiated tower blocks intertwined in the shape of the letter L borders the rectangular layout of the plot, which in the project is reserved for an urban garden with colorful paving and the planting of mature trees on semi-spherical green hills. The monumental entrance to the residential complex features a stunning open atrium, where instead of an overcrowded and heated parking lot, there is a public space with front gardens for the ground-floor apartments and a family center in the ground floor, dominated by sculptural columns shaped like the letters MAMAPAPA, which predispose the entire complex to a pop aesthetic expression. The two apartment buildings above the monumental name of the address thus, with their colorful tectonics of the synergy of the male and female principles of clothing, bring to the architectural stereotype of mass housing a revival, humor, and identity.
The higher "male" residential wing is dressed in a white striped pajama façade with generous projecting "bay windows," while the lower and longer "female" section of the complex is energized by a patchwork of color-accented loggias with structural railings and floral ornaments on beige plaster. The theme of family, familiarity, coziness, and homeliness is reflected not only in the symbolic decor of the façade but also in the topography of the outdoor and indoor spaces, which, with their semi-closed nature, should simulate the revival of a sense of belonging to a residential community in today's climate of anonymity and ignorance, which, apart from shared spaces on the ground floor, also has the opportunity for communal use of the roof terrace, made possible by the effective design of the individual apartment layouts.
MAMAPAPA aims to bring to the portfolio of typological strategies for housing the long-avoided problem of community living by developers. In the densely populated Bratislava housing network of Dúbravka, an orthogonal island of authentic living environment, contemporary aesthetics, and new neighborhood has thus emerged.
