Construction time 2 days
Prof. Martin Rajniš perceives chaos as a part of life and excessive orderliness as one of the handicaps of contemporary architecture. With his construction, he wanted to demonstrate in practice that it is possible to build a structure that will remind people of the world close to them… “At the beginning, I could not imagine how interesting it would be, and I certainly did not realize what this unassuming little building would mean for me. The realization was immediately preceded by my lecture on chaos as a creator of freedom and independence, so I was able to observe how my theory works in practice. The chaotic structure provided everyone with the opportunity to participate without being cornered by complicated technology. I saw how freedom touched everyone – it was an unforgettable experience,” said the tired but satisfied author Martin Rajniš after the completion of the construction.
How it was built: Participants of the workshop and random passersby built the basic parts – regular tetrahedra – using plastic connectors. From these pyramids with a triangular base, segments of an arch were then connected after six tetrahedra, corresponding to half the length of the DÓM arch. Using scaffolding, two segments were always erected opposite each other and interlinked with each other as well as with neighboring arches. The construction essentially took place without plans; only the framework dimensions were predetermined. The exact shape and process of the construction, the number of arch fields and segments were adjusted and improved according to the material obtained, the current inventiveness of the builders, and the final impression.
The result of the project: The workshop confirmed the anticipated properties of the construction, tested assembly procedures, and confirmed the significance and power of chaos and entropy in constructions. Its location and timing as part of a film and gourmet festival also successfully acquainted the general public with the theme.
