House Under the Willow

Generous house in the middle of a small village in Central Bohemia
Its mass is defined by two elements. A relatively pronounced slope from the road towards the garden with a private pond. And the existing mature trees, two willows located by the pond.
The house takes advantage of the terrain's slope, working with it so that the entrance part of the house is very discreet and modest from the street level, corresponding to the scale of the surrounding buildings. In contrast, the lower floor at the level of the pond is quite extensive and fully open to the garden.
The transformation of both spaces occurs in a generously conceived entrance hall with a staircase, in an elevated space with an upper skylight.

Staircase
The staircase itself is designed in an L-shape, with concrete steps and wooden treads in the upper arm, while the lower arm features steel steps.
The steel steps are anchored into the concrete wall. The width of the staircase is very generous, a full 1.5 m. We did not want to create a steel dogleg, which is why we opted for an atypical design made of reinforced cantilevered steps from bent sheet metal with a thickness of 10 mm. However, with such a thick-walled sheet, a significant bending occurred, which would have been dangerous during use.
Therefore, we turned it upside down. The risers do not connect to the level of the step but are offset to a level where it appears to make no sense. Thanks to this, the staircase, despite its width, is very airy and elevated to a dominant artistic element.

Concrete and more concrete
Concrete plays a primary role in the house. We allowed ourselves to work with its raw form, not embellishing it in any way and letting it speak throughout the entire interior.
Therefore, we can encounter exposed "blemish nests," which we did not repair at all; instead, we approach them as a decorative element.
Concrete is a shared passion that connects us with the client. We could write long essays about concrete, but words are actually unnecessary.

Working with light
Two atria and a generous skylight bring light deep into the entire tract. The atrium between the kitchen and the gym serves as a changing image. A multi-stemmed tree plays out its colorful performance, providing a variable touch of nature. We intentionally chose a deciduous species that changes color throughout the year.
And although the house is very open to the garden and at first glance it might seem that another atrium is unnecessary, we saw it differently. There are a total of two atria in the house, and their role is clear. They create their own, enclosed microcosm that concentrates attention to the center of the house. Towards the family.

Authorial accessories
In the interior design, we work not only with custom-made furniture but also with authorial elements, magnetic shelves Be_myshelf, magnetic hooks Be_myhook, and a series of storage elements Be_my ritual.
