Green Umbrella
Architect: Eric Owen Moss
Address: Hayden Tract, Culver City, USA
Completion:1996-99

The Umbrella project was realized for an amount of 1.85 million dollars at its size of 1,468 m² (16,000 square feet). Even at a three-year minimum exchange rate of the dollar to the crown, it results in 45,000 CZK per square meter. This was only the reconstruction of two warehouse buildings from the 1940s into offices and conference rooms. As with other Moos's reconstructions in the area, he did not intervene in the external form of the building. He only attached an interesting artistic object to the façade to attract the attention of the random observer and improve the rental potential of the house.
The structure of the umbrella consists of a symbiosis of two existing roof trusses, two recycled wooden trusses from a nearby demolished building, and a new metal beam (so-called truss). Metal pipes added to the trusses conceal the staircase and support the twisted glass canopy. Directly under the umbrella is a video and conference room, followed by office spaces for the advertising and production company t minus 30 Films.
The umbrella is a cascading series of NURBS surfaces made of laminated glass, which are attached to an open platform and staircase. It is the first visible building when you enter the site of his six works through The Stealth. The umbrella serves as a stage for musicians, speakers, and a place to sit during lunch breaks with a wonderful view of the entire complex.
Moos experienced a similar fortune as FOG in the case of the Lewis House (an unrealized project from 1985-95), where he could independently explore various materials and technologies without concern for money and time, allowing his multiyear insights to be applied to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. I believe we will hear a lot more about Moos.
