Interior of the apartment at Michel's Mill

Interior of the apartment at Michel's Mill
Completion:2018

The new development project U Michelského mlýna had very well-designed standards from the beginning, and all apartments were conceived as large, sunlit spaces with windows open on multiple sides and mostly across the full depth of the layout. Therefore, the work on the interior was easier at this point, as we built upon already very well-established floor plans.
The client's brief was simple: Design a pleasant, cozy home for a young family with teenagers. It should be softly colorful, with an emphasis on quality materials and comfortable living.
The layout of the main living room was the biggest challenge; the room is lit from two sides, but it is relatively narrow and very deep, with long, bare walls that feel uninviting. Thus, there was an effort to divide the space into individual zones: the kitchen area, the adjoining dining area, and then, after a gentle pause, the living room itself. All spaces are connected by a dominant bookshelf along the long left side.
In the interior, materials in earthy colors and shades (beige, gray, both in wallpaper and furniture lacquers) were used, complemented by a whitened wood tone and white color. A delicate line that connects everything is the black, which outlines, shadows, and unifies the individual spaces.
The apartment is 140 m² in size, providing every family member with plenty of privacy, and we contributed to all its parts in terms of design, from the living room to the bedroom, children's rooms, and even the cellar.
The peculiarity of the building and the only barrier was that both the ceilings and the walls were made of reinforced concrete prefab panels, leading to some compromises of a more technical nature in certain areas (e.g., the inability to move the light above the sofa).
Perhaps the most complex part of the interior was the installation of fabric natural wallpapers, which required meticulous restoration-like attention to the alignment of individual weaves.
For us, the biggest surprise was that the actual design was realized at 100%, mainly due to the great collaboration with the clients, who placed their trust in us. Thus, in this realization, the original design is essentially identical to the reality.
