Office building Knauf
Collaboration:Marta Pizio
Address: Norweska 1, Dobrzeń Wielki, Brzezie, Poland
Project:2006-07
Completion:2008-09

The administrative building is located in a functioning industrial complex of a factory that produces drywall and related products. The entire complex lies in close proximity to a thermal power plant, and by-products generated during power plant operations are used for production.
For the needs of the company's management, an unused warehouse was selected. A simple building with a rectangular floor plan, reinforced concrete structure, and a flat roof. After thoroughly cleaning the warehouse building of various attachments and extensions, the cubic form remained with rhythmically arranged window and door openings. The architects decided to preserve the outer austere appearance of the house and significantly intervened only in the interior space of the building. The original openings were replaced with unpartitioned windows providing comfortable lighting for the two-story layout. A two-story block of offices made of glass and steel was inserted into the original building. The principle of "house within a house" is applied here very consistently, not only in the form of glass office booths, but also in many other details. The white color of the facade refers to the material that is the company's main production item. White is also significantly applied in the interior, where it is contrasted with gray-painted steel structures.
The office building in Brzezie is an example of a successful conversion of an industrial building for a new purpose. The reconstruction has brought to life a dilapidated and unnecessary building, for which a purpose related to the operations of a manufacturing company has been found.
