Museum of Caricature
Architect: Gustav Peichl
Address: Steiner Landstrasse 3a, Krems, Austria
Completion:29.9.2001

In the competition for the design of the Karikaturmuseum in Krems, Gustav Peichl emerged victorious, having already realized several museums in Germany such as the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, the Städel-Museum in Frankfurt, and a proposal for the new Wilhelm-Busch-Museum in Hanover. The main features of the museum building are its distinctive roof structure and a "talking" facade. The original building aims for a simple yet distinctive architecture that is easily recognizable from other museums.
After Warsaw, Hanover, Basel, and the Gulbransson Museum in Tegernsee (Bavaria), Austria also received its own museum of satirical drawing in Krems. "Small but fine," described his design Gustav Peichl. The so-called "Deix-Haus," located diagonally opposite the Kunsthalle, was ceremoniously opened on September 21, 2001. Construction lasted barely a year. On 550 m², exhibitions of caricatures, satire, and graphics criticizing society will be on display. The upper floor is entirely dedicated to the cartoonist Manfred Deix. Approximately 300 of Deix's exhibits will be permanently displayed and continuously supplemented here. Original drawings by Ironima, better known as Gustav Peichl, will also be showcased.
Deix's collection, which was purchased for the museum by the state of Lower Austria, formed the basis for creating its own collection. By acquiring this collection for 200 million schillings (17 million euros), the museum established by far the largest collection of Deix's originals. The museum opened with an exhibition of 2000 original pieces under the title Everything is a Caricature. Exhibitions will continue to change twice to three times a year.
