Karlín Refuge
The apartment is located in the attic of a residential building in Karlín, and because it is an attic, it offers views, peace, space, and silence.
As the owner requested, we tried to meet her requirements.
The young lady has been working abroad for various humanitarian missions for a long time, so the task was to create a timeless, simple space where she would be happy to return to recharge and rest – her own refuge.
The owner’s demands gradually increased with the level of project development. I am pleased and appreciate that in the end we received the green light and could approach the originally more modest renovation in a generous manner. The owner’s distinctive taste and clear opinion pushed us forward.
Given the fact that the concept was “an apartment for a single lady,” there was no need to worry about space for a family and related connections in the apartment.
The floor area is approximately 117 m². We changed the original 4 + 1 concept to a generous 2 + kk in a duplex. The apartment was renovated, but the quality of the execution did not meet current standards. We carried out the demolition of the bathroom and some partitions.
It was also necessary to level the floor heights. The biggest obstacle was the original staircase, which occupied a large part of the main living space and mainly blocked access to the kitchen. It was replaced with a miller's staircase, which we adorned with a modern finish.
To brighten the entire apartment, we installed new Velux windows at the gallery height and covered the open rafters with a net that also serves as a relaxation zone with a view of the sky. The window in the dormer in the dining room was replaced, and now both wings can be opened, allowing one to "have breakfast outside".
In this apartment, we applied a new concept of using flooring, which is also used on the furniture.
