Where the gate once stood,
there will be a library.
The library is also a gate.
A gate of knowledge, open to the square.

The historic core of Česká Lípa is characterized by its tightly grouped blocks of bourgeois houses. The house at no. 159, located on the site in question, is the oldest house in the Liberec region and needs to be saved and restored. We propose to reconstruct its preserved parts and add a floor and an attic. The new extension of the library thus complements the missing part of the urban block and completes it at the point where the higher buildings of Tržní street meet the lower front of Sokolská street in the square. The proposed extension connects to the cornices of both streets. All parts of the library are united by a gable roof. The library opens to the square with a glazed façade of the main entrance and reading room, thus demonstrating its city-wide significance. By moving the entrance façade into the arcade with a café, Jeřábkové square becomes part of the library's life. Due to the elevation of the roadway to the level of the sidewalks, a pedestrian zone will arise from the church to TGM Square and Škrábek Square, planted with trees and complemented by a cooling mist fountain in the form of a three-dimensional bronze artifact on a circular stone platter. The library creates a peaceful multi-level courtyard filled with greenery, serving as a playground, a venue for cultural events in the open air, or as a refuge for readers.
