The new two-story shopping center is located on ČSA Street in Brezno, on the site of a former free parking lot. It is a heterogeneous area where the edge of the historical part of the town meets the panel housing construction from the 1980s. The architecture of the shopping center suitably coexists with the environment and connects the residential development with the old town district. The shopping center is clearly visible upon entering the town.
The priority was economic efficiency, which was reflected in the budget allocated for the project. It was a standard assignment for creating a shopping center with retail spaces for rent. Nevertheless, we sought a distinct and memorable architectural language that would support urbanity by creating a lively street. The transparent ground floor allows passersby to perceive the internal activities, and movement around it is stimulating and interesting. The extension of the pedestrian pathway is achieved by the overhangs of the floor above the level of the sidewalk, which also serves as a shelter for people waiting at a heavily utilized bus stop by the building. The upper part of the building has a dynamic form of freely broken smooth white walls with large openings oriented towards both sides of the road. The resulting shape of the glacial white surface leaves a strong memory trace in the passerby.
Most shopping centers are oriented inwards and are rather introverted. The shopping center in Brezno is rather extroverted, utilizing a transparent ground floor and large openings on the facade of the upper floor to promote a lively commercial street and entice passersby inside. Inside, the space of the floors is visually interconnected through an open gallery, which creates a clear orientation within the building. It suitably fits between two intersecting heterogeneous locations of the town center and the panel housing development, which it does not divide but connects, while creating a quality public space with a thoughtful interaction with the bus stop in front of the building.
The shopping center in Brezno received a nomination for the CE.ZA.AR 2015 award and for the Dušan Jurkovič Award 2015. The jury particularly appreciated the unique architecture and the high-quality technical execution of the project with rationally spent costs. The shopping center in Brezno demonstrates the fact that even with little money, a beautiful building with quality architecture can be created.
