Sheepfold

Sheepfold
Address: Tatobity, Žlábek, Czech Republic
Investor:Tomáš Kuncíř
Completion:2010

Motto:
When the sheep are happy, the shepherd is happy, and so are his servant and children. When the family is cheerful, the neighbors and the whole village are joyful as well.

The stone structure has a rectangular floor plan with a built-up area of 70 m², featuring a sloping metal roof and a large dormer, which was originally intended for hay dumping from a cart pulled by oxen, but that did not materialize.
The layout divides the space into two parts. The first serves as a space for the winter housing of sheep, calves, and sometimes piglets, with an attic space for hay storage. The second part lacks attic space and allows for the passage of machinery through the entire building via large wooden sliding doors.
A characteristic feature of the sheepfold is the wooden lattice made of young ash shoots with a maximum diameter of 5 cm, located on the eastern side in the upper part. It serves as a ventilated facade for the hay storage. Another element is the massive stone masonry made of local gabrodiorite stone from a quarry known as Košťálovský.
The construction is made of stone and wood.
The entire building was erected by the shepherd's family on their own.
