spontaneous performance in the urban landscape / lawn

Picnic of the New Scene
Address: Národní 4, Prague, Czech Republic
Completion:19.08. - 18.9.2010
Built Up Area:430 m2

The New Scene of the National Theatre and the civic association BonArt presented during August and September a series of installations created by the authors specifically for the public space of the piazza of the National Theatre. The ND piazza was dominated by a generous grassy carpet covering an area of 430m², complemented by original interactive objects by A. Jirát and a sculptural intervention by P. Karous and the group New Eternity into the sculpture by J. Malejovský.

The picnic, in the form of urban seating, encouraged a variety of activities for a month, including reading, playing, relaxing, sunbathing, sports, resting, circus, feasting... A civic program in the urban landscape open to everyone.

The Picnic installation of the New Scene emerged from a joint design by the New Scene ND and the Roháč Stratil studio, and it was subsequently one of 80 projects that visitors could view at the City Interventions exhibition in Prague and Brno. This was a collaborative authorship project by the team consisting of Marcela Straková, Jan Roháč, and Bronislav Stratil.

The natural grassy area measuring 430m² was placed on an elevated stage above the existing pavement. The supporting structure of the stage was made of wooden system formwork provided as a sponsorship by PERI, spol. s r.o. A standard composition of a so-called green roof was installed on the horizontal surface of the stage. The placement of the grassy area seamlessly connected to the flower pots that are firmly placed on the ND piazza in front of the so-called restaurant building.

"This is another in a series of attempts to revitalize the sometimes overly tranquil space of the National Theatre piazza. Moreover, picnicking is an activity that poses no threat to passersby, which cannot be said with such certainty for other sports traditionally practiced in this place. Said about the project Štěpán Kubišta, director of the New Scene.

The Picnic project of the New Scene is not only imaginative but also sensitive to the space in which it is installed. It enlivens a location that isn’t often visited and offers residents of Prague 1 the chance to spend pleasant moments in a bustling center,” said Filip Dvořák, mayor of Prague 1, noting that the event suitably complements the city hall's efforts to revitalize the city center.

"The lawn at the New Scene" "sprouted" within a few days as an invitation to activities we usually direct to other places. But that is about to change. Anyone who wants to play sports, sunbathe, or host a barbecue party in the middle of the metropolis has the opportunity. There are no limits to activities."
Radek Wohlmut, Týden

"...the space at the New Scene, paved with granite slabs, which has been loved perhaps only by skateboarders since the 1980s, suddenly feels much friendlier. One can sit on it, have a picnic, and even play soccer... it’s a sympathetic gesture that resonates with Prague residents: suddenly the dead zone is full of people, and they evidently enjoy the opportunity to lie on the grass." Jan H. Vitvar, Respekt

"THE STONIEST OF CZECH STONE THEATERS - the National in Prague - is clearly trying to innovate some things this season. It utilizes a stage that has this coded in its very name. The external signal that something is happening is the now grassy area between both ND buildings on Národní street (you can picnic freely until September 18)... " Reflex

Antonín Jirát - Let's Grant Them a Miracle II

The set of three interactive objects explores the theme of miracles as evidence of the supernatural. The work was inspired by the book by the Strugatsky brothers "Roadside Picnic."
The version of the "miraculous" installation created for the public space of the National Theatre piazza shifts the theme of miracles into the context of architecture of the normalization era - the time when the Nová scéna building was constructed as part of the extension of the ND and when the space of the piazza itself was created.

Pavel Karous and the group New Eternity - Chewing Gum
With a temporary intervention into the sculpture "Rebirth" by Josef Malejovský from 1983, which is permanently placed in the ND piazza, sculptor Pavel Karous and the artistic group New Eternity made their mark on the ND piazza. Chewing Gum alluded to the theme the artist has been engaged with for several years - sculpture and plastic in public spaces of the 70s and 80s. "Such a Chewing Gum," assessed passersby, referring to the nearly historic Malejovský sculpture. Karous temporarily transformed the sculpture into a chewing gum.

The group New Eternity prepared the installation consisting of Pavel Karous, Helena Sequensová, and Adam Stanko.

The project ART MEETS THE (P.R.A.H.A.) STREETS was realized in co-organization with the City District Prague 1, and the installations are supported by a grant from the City Hall of the Capital City of Prague.
