Horseshoe-shaped depot

Horseshoe-shaped depot

Address: Novoryazanskaya 27, Moscow, Russia
Project:1926
Completion:1926 - 1928

Brick building near Kazan Railway Station in the shape of a horseshoe. Melnik's solution on a triangular plot allowed maximizing parking spaces with convenient vehicle maneuvering, even though parking had to be done in reverse. The building is set back in two places to the street line, facilitating both entrance and exit onto the narrow street. Inside, vehicles are arranged in two rows along a central path. The horseshoe shape is compositionally completed by a two-story service building.
The building is still functioning as a depot; however, due to differing vehicle lengths compared to the years around 1920, parking is no longer done according to the original scheme. The object deserves renovation.
