Revival of a Family House near Klatovy

Revival of a Family House near Klatovy
The main idea of the design was an effort to sensitively modify the original house in connection with a modern extension. The result is a connection between the traditional village form of the building with contemporary elements and architectural details.

In the existing village development near Klatovy, there stood a residential house with a barn that the builder and his parents, who originate from here, used for recreation. The original barn was removed due to its unsatisfactory condition, and a new section was created in its place, adjacent to the original living part of the house, which was reconstructed.

The family house is single-storey, with an attic in the shape of an L. Within the layout, there are two existing cellars that were preserved. The roof of the house is gabled, complemented by dormers. The architectural design essentially stems from the structural solution, where the existing residential house is supplemented with a new part. It is thus a combination of the originally traditionally conceived style with a modern completion. The house is designed with contemporary materials and technologies, emphasizing architectural details. The existing house is finished in a structured plaster facade with the original stone base. The new section features a facade cladding made of burned wood. The windows are in wood-aluminum frames, and the roofing is metal, folded.

The house consists of two parts for the builder and for his parents, with a shared entrance and facilities.
The entrance to the family house is through a vestibule, from which doors lead to the original cellar. To the left of the entrance door is the parents' section, located in the original residential building. Here, a kitchen with a dining area, a room, and sanitary facilities are designed. Another door from the vestibule leads into the newly designed part, where the builder's apartment is located. The vestibule flows into a corridor with access to a toilet, pantry, and a living room with a kitchen corner. In front of the staircase is a technical room. The attic features a gallery with a view into the living room on the ground floor, a bedroom, a room, a bathroom, a wardrobe, and a guest room. Above the bedroom is still a free space accessible by an attached ladder, where guests can sleep or relax.

The existing walls of the residential part are mixed. Due to moisture, additional hydro insulation was applied in part of the layout using an injection system. The original wooden ceilings were replaced with new ones; in some areas, the existing vaults were retained and repaired. Window openings and internal arrangements were adjusted according to the new design. As part of the extension, a load-bearing system made of brick blocks with additional insulation was chosen. The ceiling above the ground floor is wooden beam construction with sheathing. The roofing of the entire building is newly designed – it is a classic truss with exposed wooden elements, boarding, and over-roof insulation. The roof covering is metal and folded. The perimeter walls of both the new and original parts are additionally insulated with mineral wool. To ensure the gradual drying of the existing damp masonry, a suspended facade made of facade panels with plaster on a grid with a ventilated gap is proposed. The wooden cladding consists of boards treated by burning.

Interior
The effort was to let the space itself stand out as much as possible, where the dominant feature is the exposed truss structure with boarding in a light shade. The floors consist of ceramic tiles and wooden floating floors. The kitchen, built-in wardrobes, and cladding are in a combination of wood decor and laminate in anthracite shade. The internal staircase is made of welded steel sheet in a powder-coated anthracite color. The railing is steel with infill made of stainless steel mesh.
