Reconstruction and interior of the apartment

Reconstruction and interior of the apartment
Completion:2021-22
Area:112 m2

The apartment is located in the residential complex by Kuba & Pilař architects from 2007. After twenty years, the quality of the design and selected materials, which we built upon, is evident in the building. We did not need to significantly intervene in the actual layouts, but the interior modifications made by the previous owner were not satisfactory for the clients. We cleared the interior of drop ceilings, decorative elements, and other decorative features. Only the dark wooden floor remained from the pre-reconstruction state. We also decided not to intervene in the technical room and smaller bathroom at this stage, as they functionally meet the requirements. For the new interior setup, we adjusted the electrical distribution in the rooms, but we did not make any structural changes to the rooms.

The biggest changes occurred in the living space and bathroom. The center of the apartment became a turquoise cube, around which the space flows from the entrance hallway to the living room with the kitchen. The cube conceals the entrance to the technical room and smaller bathroom and integrates storage spaces – it hides a tall wardrobe with a shoe compartment in the hallway, a storage shelving unit in the corridor, a pantry adjacent to the kitchen, and an open bookshelf leading into the living room.

Due to the connection to the home utilities, most of the kitchen fixtures are placed on the visible main wall. The work surface is further extended by an island that hides a wine fridge and additional storage spaces. The work surface and kitchen cladding are adorned with the texture of natural stone.

At the client's request, we complemented the wooden floor with a screed that is uniform in the hallway, kitchen, and new bathroom. It provides a seamless surface throughout, including the shower area and its walls. The wooden floor, deep red cladding of the loggias, black window frames, and the wish for white walls and ceiling predetermined a palette of rich tones and contrasting solutions. The colorfully highlighted mass of the cube stands out in the space, complemented by complementary red lamps in the bookshelf, a rich mustard seating area, and a colorful carpet. The neutral color of the screed, hidden door frames, pale shades in the kitchen, and white ceiling lights and paint create a balance that allows the dominant elements of the interior to stand out. Details feature black, which ties in with the color of the window frames and softens their striking contrast. Some of the original furniture has been successfully renovated; the bodies of the built-in wardrobes in the bedroom were fitted with new veneered doors, and the wardrobe body in the hallway was equipped with doors featuring a full-length mirror.

An important aspect of any interior is the lighting design, which ensures good lighting conditions for active use of the space, while also creating a pleasant atmosphere at any time of day. In the living room, several light sources have been designed that can be combined, adjusted with dimmers, and a night lighting mode has been considered for each room.
