A multi-generation villa from 1928 stands in a garden in a quiet part of Michle, on a corner lot between V Úhlu and Průčelní streets. Over time, garages and a garden shed were added at the edge of the property.
The investor's wish was to create two full-fledged apartments and a greater connection of the lower unit to the garden. The house is raised half a floor above the garden.
The investor also considered the option of demolishing the entire house and building a new one. In the end, the emotional attachment to the existing house prevailed, and he decided to take the more complex route of renovation with an extension towards the garden.
Right from the start, the investor had a clear idea of what he wanted his living space to look like. He even brought us a sketch with the planned extension, and he had already thought through the kitchen unit down to the last detail. Such a specific brief felt quite constraining to us, but it ultimately turned out that the investor's clear vision and focus on even the smallest detail significantly contributed to the quality of the entire renovation. Thanks to his willingness to explore less conventional solutions, everything appears minimalist and clean.
The first floor contains the investor's apartment, which is newly connected to the garden via the extension. The frameless glazing of the entire extension is intended to maximize this connection. The second floor and the attic belong to the upper apartment. The basement provides technical facilities.
The extension and the new awning above the entrance to the house are designed as simple broken slabs made of exposed concrete. Their minimalist design clearly delineates the original from the new. The goal was not to disrupt the existing mass, but rather to complement it. With a few minor adjustments related to the change in the layout, the original facade divisions of the house are preserved.
The garden is enhanced with a jacuzzi and a swimming pool, partially sunken into the terrain. The garages and entrances to the property have also been adapted to current standards.
