The atmosphere of Zámecká Street in the center of Mikulov is created by the small scale of the surrounding buildings, views of the roofs of historic houses, and vistas into nearby Austria, with the mass of Mikulov Castle "behind" it, and last but not least, the history of the Jewish quarter that was located in its heart.
The aspiration of the designed house is to utilize the potential of this unique location, to ensure enough privacy in the tourist-heavy surroundings, to blend in naturally and discreetly with the narrow historical center of Mikulov, while distinctly differentiating the house from the surrounding historic buildings.
The proposed house purposefully occupies the entire plot of approximately 240 m². It opens into a courtyard of intimate size enclosed by walls made of local limestone and bricks. The living room and "studio" are directly connected to the courtyard, with the bedroom accessed via an external staircase and generous terrace.
The internal space of the house is defined by the use of different height levels of the street and the courtyard, the connecting of internal spaces, and the opening into the roof truss on the upper floor.
The atmosphere of a solid brick house and the attached light wooden "studio" is created by different material and structural solutions - the house is a brick construction finished with plaster, while the studio is mainly a timber structure with a facade of larch boards.
The house is built from "classic" materials, and its execution of details distinguishes it from the materially and formally similar surrounding historic buildings. The form of the object is simplified by hidden gutters, ceramic roof tiles that are similar to the common beaver tail tiles used in the area, but with a flat edge. The windows are frameless or wooden with simple profiles, set at various depths within the window openings.
The courtyard area is largely paved with a brick terrace and compacted gravel, while roses and herbs are planted around the walls.
