The general effort over the last few decades to create an environment in Františkovy Lázně that is even more "spa-like" is so persistent that it provokes a search for an attitude free of prejudice, for a personal expression of relaxation and elegance with contemporary means.
The Dr. Peták Sanatorium concentrates all essential functional components of the spa town typology: accommodation, dining, and balneotherapy. A key theme of the building is the maximum connection to the garden and park environment.
The plot is situated on the southern edge of the park that surrounds the classicist core of the town. The scale of neighboring agricultural estates in the grouping of the Cheb courtyard contrasts with the small structure of villa houses from the Art Deco era.
The two-story, partially basement building with a capacity of 42 beds is designed as a steel-brick skeleton. The floor plan measuring 47 x 9.2 m defines the main volume founded in peat. From it, wings are cantilevered on the first floor. The skeleton allowed for the coordination of different spatial modules above one another - the module of hotel rooms on the second floor with the module of the kitchen, dining room, reception, balneotherapy, and barrier-free rooms on the first floor and with the module of service spaces in the basement.
The focal point of the sanatorium is the treatment section. Around its center - the rehabilitation pool with seawater - are concentrated dry and wet therapies extending on glass cantilevers into the garden and park. Specific treatments, such as peat wraps, Scottish showers, and doctor's offices, are enclosed in solid brick blocks. Around them, the space flows through the house between partitions made of tinted glass and screens in soft pastel colors from the park to the garden.
The choice of construction, layout solutions, and selection of materials are subordinated to the maximum saving of space (sandwich insulated panels, frameless glazing), or to cost savings under complex conditions. The formal austerity and rational concept are not only a contemporary way of expression but also a manner in which the construction of the sanatorium communicates with the strong classicist tradition of Františkovy Lázně.
