In the summer, a new restaurant called Sandwich Rodeo opened in Letná. This is already the third collaboration between Tomáš Oujezdský and 0.5 Studio. Sandwich Rodeo thus complements the trio of American gastro establishments Mr. HotDog and BIG SMOKERS.
ATMOSPHEREOne of the main goals was to create a venue with a clear gastro concept that fits into the informal atmosphere of Prague’s Letná and works alongside an established bistro. As with previous designs, we wanted to connect the story of food, people, and interior in one cohesive experience as much as possible with the investor. The aim was to capture the essence of American sandwich diners from the 1970s and present it without kitschy decorations and biased approaches. The design site was a residential building from the 19th century, which had not undergone reconstruction since the 1980s. Therefore, it was necessary to completely renovate the entire space while also respecting the atmosphere of the location.
BROWN, BROWN, AND BROWNWithout significant spatial changes, the area was successfully divided into a comfortable kitchen and a local bar that dealt with the historically given layout. The goal was to design a wood-paneled "hideout" that evokes a blend of several atmospheres: an American diner, a hotel lobby, or a scout clubhouse. We worked with layers of materials and thematic references. The unifying element was the ubiquitous brown color in several shades. Brown appears on the stained base made of solid wood, wall cladding of stained MDF boards, ceramic tiles in the restroom, and the painted glossy ceiling. One of the significant elements also became the original marble floor from the 1980s, known as "tlačenka," which was sensitively refurbished and supplemented. Stainless steel was also used as a reference to the aesthetics of the 1980s and served as a material connection with the open kitchen.
TO SEE AND BE SEENVisitors enter the establishment through two entrances. The main entrance is at the corner of Kamenická and Milady Horákové streets. The space is divided into several sections and types of seating. The entrance area is designated for standing and contains higher tables and an iconic counter facing the window. Everything flows seamlessly into the bar section and the open kitchen, which is visible from the restaurant space and Kamenická street. The center of the bistro is the main area with windows overlooking the busy Milady Horákové street. Thematically and functionally, custom-made iconic benches were chosen. They provide a comfortable seating space for pairs as well as groups. All customers have privacy in this relatively small area, a view of the busy street, while also attracting passersby with their food to comfortable seats in the upholstered "booths," which can evoke a train. The space also includes classic seating with chairs. As a finishing element and to create an optical illusion of a larger space, the end visual wall was covered with mirrors. The last type of seating consists of outdoor benches that line the entire bistro on Kamenická street during the summer season. Thanks to the intensive collaboration with the investor on the brief, execution of the design, and individual details, it was possible to realize a comprehensively conceived interior. The investor, along with their team, was also the creator of the menu, resulting in a compact connection between the interior and the gastro offer that is unparalleled in Prague.
INVESTORSandwich Rodeo is a diner and bar, where under one roof we try to tame sandwiches and other beloved comfort foods from New York to New Orleans. A concise offer of natural wines, craft beers, and cocktails represents our bar. For lunch, a snack, or dinner, you can enjoy a sandwich with spicy fried chicken, a beef toast with grilled onions, a shrimp roll, our baguette with grilled bolognese salami and cheese, or a fish soup with vegetables. We offer plenty of mayonnaise, our thin fries, as well as salad with kale and lemon dressing. In the future, we plan to expand the offer to include weekend breakfasts.
