Sports Hall in Otaniemi

The Sports Hall (Urheiluhalli) in Otaniemi was originally built for the needs of the Olympic Games in 1952. Today, it serves as a sports center for the Helsinki University of Technology for athletics. In addition to athletics disciplines, the hall also features a bowling alley, wrestling rooms, a boxing ring, and tennis courts. The architectural shape defined the layout of the running track and the area for the javelin throw. The main structure of the hall consists of wooden trusses that were assembled on the ground and then lifted into a vertical position. A large athletics hall and a smaller tennis hall are connected by an artificial embankment formed by the stands. This solution allows spectators to watch events in both halls without the need for significant movement. Changing rooms and access corridors for athletes are located under the stands.
