A small apartment for short-term rental like Airbnb in the center of Prague has only 23 square meters. It doesn't have traditional windows, only two roof windows high above the floor, which offer a view of the city center.
The task was to accommodate two people with all the comforts despite the apartment's disadvantages. At the same time, it must stand out in its interior design compared to other apartments offered through the Airbnb platform, so it must grab attention at first glance. However, it should not be obvious, for example, by using bright colors. Rather, it should serve as a refuge in the midst of a busy city suitable for rest and relaxation.
The solution became a built-in wooden cube made of birch plywood with several functions. It is used as an elevated double bed accessible by a metal ladder and also as a lookout over Prague from the roof window. The inside of the cube serves as a lockable space for the cleaning service that manages the entire apartment. To make the space feel as large and airy as possible, we combined the hallway with the living room and used a large mirror that visually enlarges and brightens the space.
The apartment has sufficient storage space in the form of built-in wardrobes. The doors have hooks to increase storage capacity. The dining table is placed in a nook where two people can comfortably eat and can easily be transformed into a workspace. Instead of a classic sofa, we designed a bench with upholstery that connects to the sleeping cube. The small kitchenette hides everything necessary, including a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker located in a recess.
The entire interior is designed in pleasant earthy tones and natural colors. The advantage of the entire solution is that the apartment can easily be transformed into long-term living, and the cleaning cube can become a storage room or wardrobe.
