"We perceive the square as a large room (salon) with an embedded central town hall, with fountains and a repaired carpet on the floor."PavingWe consider the paving as a carpet that runs at one level across the square. The pattern is a reflection of its development in individual stages, which the design respects. Curbs and sidewalks are recessed to the same level as the square. The composition of pavings and materials is preserved, including perforated rail lines, minor repairs after network fixes, and so on. Irregularities are not considered flaws and have been retained.
Golden ribbons made of brass flow through all areas, primarily aimed at highlighting the directions of the paving surfaces. This is the only contemporary artifact that showcases the diversity of historical paving while also uniting a collage of different types of paving into a single whole.
DetailsUnusual drainage inlets and covers, parking spots, are integrated into the paving surface. Together with brass ribbons, they introduce contemporary elements to the historical paving.
LightingThe lighting of the Upper Square was designed with lamps featuring indirect lighting, which uniformly distributes light across the entire square. The lamps were developed for one year and received all necessary certifications. After the prototype presentation, the State Institute of Design protested against their installation and issued a negative opinion. As a substitute solution, standard Thorn lamps were implemented. The lamps are arranged in two circuits. The first, with greater lighting intensity, lines the perimeter of the square. The second circuit circles around the town hall, gently illuminating the space between the fountains and the arcade. The circuits are complemented by festive lighting of landmarks and important buildings.
The lighting concept for the entire square was chosen to create a stable intensity of light at the ground level, which would not interfere with the festive lighting of the objects, allowing them to stand out. The illuminated objects thus gain a distinct status, unspoiled by lamp light.
Street FurnitureThe elements of the street furniture enhance the overall atmosphere of the square representing the salon. Therefore, they are designed to be almost room-like or interior. The complete set of furniture includes a lamp with indirect lighting, a bench, a bike rack, and a trash bin. Everything is made from steel coated with black graphite paint, and only the bench has a seat and backrest made of plum wood. Additional features are information boards for significant objects, located both in the paving and on the façades of buildings.
City ModelComplementing the furniture is an information model of the city, made and cast from bronze, placed on a terrazzo pedestal. The model replaces the traditional table information system. It is positioned to allow for good orientation.
