We decided to place a simple object – a shelter – at the selected location, sensitively set into the landscape. For the visitor, it provides several functions and creates a safe space without unnecessary embellishments.
Ideologically, we worked with the theme of a mountain hut, which still serves as a mountain dwelling in its own way. This archetypal object is clear in both form and construction. It utilizes a basic construction element, which becomes a direct part of the interior.
By rediscovering and subsequently transforming the traditional log construction, we create an object that carries a trace of the past while also offering an experience of space. The revealed wooden construction in its nakedness reflects the utilitarian nature of the object.
The cozy shelter is set in the northern part of the meadow next to the Tŕstie cottage, on the site of the current old sawmill. It is not the focal point. On the contrary. From the edge of the meadow, it observes the horizon and does not disrupt the unique view of both nearby and distant mountain peaks.
The shelter stands on a low stone foundation and is oriented with its gable perpendicular to the terrain.
The basic construction element of the object is a wooden beam made of red spruce, with dimensions of 120 × 160 mm. By repeating and stacking it bluntly in two directions, a perimeter construction is created, which remains visible from both the outside and the inside. By omitting wooden beams in the perimeter construction, gaps are formed that allow light and air into the object, giving the building its unique expression. The same construction elements are also used to define the interior and the "furniture," which is thus a solid part of the building. The wooden beam is the dominant expressive element of both the exterior and interior of the shelter. The furnishings remain austere, durable, and resistant to damage. Wooden shingles are used as the roof covering.
