Imagine a valley, with a quietly murmuring stream surrounded by a pine forest. At the top of the slope is a tiny clearing, where the scent of needles lingers, and when you want to sit on the ground, you make sure not to soil your shorts with blueberries. A place you want to return to regularly to clear your head from the hustle and bustle of the city; a place where you will be alone, or rather where you will be neighbors to squirrels, deer, and local birds. Mr. Bernau found one such place in South Bohemia, a short distance from Nová Bystřice in the region of Czech Canada, at the edge of a small village. He came to us saying he wanted to build a weekend cabin here with a small garage where he could park his motorcycle and possibly the motorcycles of friends who come to visit him and play golf at the nearby golf course.
After several meetings and reflecting on Mr. Bernau's further requests, a proposal was created for a set of two wooden structures – the first larger part, the main one, with a residential function, complemented by a smaller building with a garage and a sauna.
The simple wooden building has a central main space open to the roof. This large bright room is multifunctional, transitioning from the kitchen to the dining area and further into the living area. In the warm months, the glass wall can be completely opened, thus connecting the indoor space with the outdoor wooden terrace. This creates a large relaxation zone that blurs the boundary between nature and the house. The other rooms are microscopic, designated only for sleeping. Given that the house is fully embedded in the forest, we were not afraid of large glazed sections. At the same time, there is the possibility to close the entire house with wooden sliding panels, securing it during times when the house is uninhabited.
The house for Mr. Bernau was created with our favorite partner, Vesper Frames. It is a classic wooden structure built from wooden panels. Thanks to good insulation, it is not energetically demanding. Moreover, the high heating capacity of the fireplace and the open-plan layout ensure that the house warms up quickly in winter, and practical remote-controlled electric heating can also be added.
It is November. Imagine a valley, with a quietly murmuring stream surrounded by a pine forest. At the top of the slope stands a wooden house. You are just coming out of the sauna, settling into a deckchair with your favorite book while sipping freshly chilled beer. After a while, you are interrupted by the crackling of twigs, you turn, and a nimble deer rushes by. A cold wind blows, and so you hide in the living room by the fireplace. When you later look out the window, you realize that it has started to snow.
