The private villa of Jindřich Kumpošt

The private villa of Jindřich Kumpošt
Architect Jindřich Kumpošt designed his own family house in 1922 at 15 Barvičova Street. At that time, construction activity in the Masaryk Quarter was just beginning, and Kumpošt, as the head of the Regulatory and Architectural Department of the City of Brno's Building Office, contributed significantly to this development.
The two-story building on the south-sloping plot consists of a main mass with a gabled roof, to which another cubic volume topped with a roof terrace is attached. Amid the surrounding buildings, the house stands out with its brick façade, which combines the austerity of traditional English architecture with the expressiveness of the Amsterdam Wendingen school, particularly evident in the more sculptural garden façade. Here, horizontal concrete cornices and lintels stand out, the rational nature of which is interrupted by a fluted column with the statue of the Player on the Dulzaina by Václav H. Mach and the ornamental balustrade of the terrace.
The main entrance to the house is located on the street façade and leads directly into the spacious entrance hall on the ground floor, where there is also a kitchen and a living room leading to the garden terrace. The first floor of the house was partly conceived by the architect as his own studio oriented towards the street, which is completely functionally separated from the family spaces and has its own side entrance, staircase, kitchen, and bathroom. Two private bedrooms are oriented to the east and south with a terrace. Another expansive terrace is located on the flat roof of the side wing. The attic and garden basement are also habitable, which houses a caretaker's apartment, garage, and technical facilities.
After the construction was completed in 1924, Kumpošt was forced to rent the house until 1931 due to financial reasons. After that, he moved here with his family and the entire design office. The building has been preserved in its original state, except for minor interior modifications, as the Kumpošt family has not left it to this day.
