Adaptation of an urban house on Šmilovského Street into a healthcare facility focusing on cytological analyses of cell tissues. In the attic, there is the owner’s apartment. This purpose exemplarily embodies our ideas about utilizing the city center and renovations within historical structures. The combination of a small company with ten employees and the private apartment of the co-owner creates a lively collage that utilizes the house in a historical context fully throughout the day.
The layout was designed to keep the street facade unchanged. At the rear, extending into the courtyard, the house was elongated and adapted to the operational needs. In the lower part, there are staff facilities and storage spaces, while the upper part features a hall with microscopes, a sample preparation area, and office spaces. Glass cladding, dividing partitions, and poured floors are in shades of light gray, and the plaster is white. A striking element is the metal staircase with illuminated glass steps. This light object gives character to the entrance space and the communication hall on the 2nd floor.
The attic apartment has a private staircase accessible through a passage between the houses directly from the street. The apartment opens to the street through three dormers, which are also the only modern elements visible from the street. To the garden, the apartment opens onto a terrace and a series of skylights that illuminate the entire living space with overhead light. The dominant feature of the apartment is a bridge parallel to the ridge line of the house, which houses a study and a reading room.
The garden symbolizes a sensitive connection between corporate and private life. It is used by employees during breaks and on Sundays, coffee is made in the outdoor kitchen. The center of the garden features a terrace with a fountain. Further from the house, the garden becomes more intimate and quieter. The building faces the garden with a glass facade and a removable wooden lattice.
