ConceptThe dynamic portrayal of the installation refers to the main theme of the Czech pavilion, which is water. It determined the spatial relationships and the concept of erosive action on the solid mass of the platforms.
Shapes are deformed through digital fluid simulation based on the model of sandstone formations known in the Czech landscape. The gradual layering of sediments in their composition and duration of stages determines various physical properties of the uniform stratification, binding for all masses of the installation. Specific erosional action can be read on the formations at the same height.
SituationThe exhibition space for the temporary exhibitions of Regions and partners participating in EXPO 2015 is located on the first floor of the Czech pavilion. Two entrances open into a room with an area of 71.3m2 square floor plan from the balcony of the central atrium. Opposite the entrance to the exhibition, the space opens to the exterior with a trio of large-format windows.
SpaceGiven the large number of exhibitors in this exhibition and their differing
requirements for installation methods, most of the area is left open or configurable.
Fixed exhibition areas adjoin the walls of the installation. Only mobile exhibition areas are placed in the space, which can be relocated outside the exhibition if necessary. A partition, designed as a base for variable shelves, defines the exhibition space between the entrance and exit. Movement in the space and the way of exhibiting are free.
ConstructionOrganically shaped masses were created through advanced simulation in 3D software, facilitating the production of these complex forms. A 3D-milled core is covered with a laminate shell on the surface. This technology was developed in collaboration with architect Zdeněk Fránek.
Exhibition areas are washable and removable. They cover technological backgrounds for lighting and electrical installations. Within the exhibit of the fragment of the Dalimil Chronicle, a circulation system cooled by a Peltier element with a dehumidifier is hidden inside the platform.
IntentThe diversity of shapes that erosive agents in nature can create inspired us to reverse the process, whereby sculptures are formed from sandstone blocks by sculptors.
We let simulated currents erode objects created by human hands.
Thanks to digital simulation, we are able to mimic the processes of sedimentation and erosion of sandstones,
which occurred over millions of years and gave rise to the typical landscape forms of sandstone towns.
