Jakub Potůček: Automatické telefonní ústředny - přednáška ve Fiducii

Don't miss the lecture by architectural historian Jakub Potůček about one of the most endangered groups of industrial heritage – the buildings of telephone exchanges, which today represent a phenomenon of the most threatened layer of Czech architecture. Expertly designed structures housed bulky electromechanical equipment while also expressing technical progress and the social significance of the public telecommunications network. However, analog systems were soon replaced by digital ones, which require neither large spaces nor human operation. The buildings of the original exchanges have thus lost their purpose and are disappearing in the hands of new owners. Jakub Potůček will guide you through the development of these buildings in Czechoslovakia, as well as the social and political contexts of their emergence. There will also be a discussion about the valuable Ostrava telephone exchange located in Mariánské Hory. At the same time, we will launch a coloring book for children on the theme of Ostrava's architecture, which features 20 unique Ostrava buildings in their basic, typical, and unique forms.
