Biography
He was born in Brno-Řečkovice in a functionalist villa designed by his father Florián Kuba and began studying at the Faculty of Architecture in Brno in 1952.
At the age of twenty-five, he started working in Ostrava under architect Vorl and soon received the opportunity to participate in the construction of the new part of Ostrava, Poruba, which was designed for one hundred thousand inhabitants. This was a great challenge for him as a young architect and also a paradox of the time, as such an opportunity to be involved in building a new city would certainly not have been possible in Brno. The modern residential buildings with amenities being developed on the new Lenin Street, differing from the unifying blocks of that era, are characterized especially by atypical elements on the facade, recessed ground floors, and set-back roof extensions.
In the early 1960s, he began designing what are called comprehensive residential buildings / further KBV /, which were placed within housing in the individual districts of Ostrava – Poruba. From 1967 to 1979, he realized most of these centers.
In addition to urban-architectural complexes, his work also includes significant solo buildings in the center of Ostrava. In 1976, he completed the operational building of OKR – Transportation (design for the Urban Plan – Ing. arch. Ivo Klimeš). This building received an award in the STP competition – 1st prize at the regional review. Throughout these realizations, he worked closely with a number of artists, but primarily gave space to Mr. Lumír Čmerda, an evangelical pastor, painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, creator of many monumental wooden reliefs. He also served as the chairman of the regional branch of the Union of Architects of the CSSR, during which he organized a number of seminars, social events, and exhibitions.
Throughout his time at Stavoprojekt Ostrava, he participated in architectural competitions both domestically and abroad. 1959 – 3rd prize theater Prešov (with architect Kupka), 1964 – 1st prize center of Havířov, 1965 – award pavilion ČSR Montreal, 1974 – 1st prize center of Ostrava II, opera in Sofia – award in international competition (together with architects Bichler and Klimeš), 1977 – 2nd prize congress hall in Brno (together with architect Bichler), 1983 – 3rd prize theater in Košice.
After the Velvet Revolution, in 1993, he began collaborating with his son Roman and his Atelier Simona. Over the following years, they worked together on many significant buildings in the Moravian-Silesian Region, such as the reconstruction of the administrative building of SMP a.s. in the center of Ostrava, the new KB Ostrava – Poruba, etc.
In the last ten years of his life, he began to focus intensely on literary activities, primarily writing poetry and blogs, which he published regularly. During this period, two books were published – Collections of Ironic Verses of Everyday Life – Vol. I and II. Writing poetry and blogs accompanied him until the last moments of his life. He died in September 2017 at the age of nearly 85.
