Biography
Günter Behnisch was a German architect who grew up in the suburbs of Dresden in Lockwitz. In 1934, the family moved to Saxon Chemnitz. In 1939, he enlisted as a volunteer in the German Navy, completed basic training, and served on submarines during World War II. In October 1944, he became the commander of the submarine U 2337 and was in British captivity from May 1945 to February 1947. From 1947 to 1951, he studied architecture at the University of Technology in Stuttgart. From 1951 to 1952, he worked in Rolf Gutbrod's office in Stuttgart. In 1952, he established his own architectural office in Stuttgart, which he led together with Bruno Lambart until 1956. From 1966 to 2005, the office was named Behnisch & Partners, where he had one or more partners. In 1963, he served as a professor at the Technical School in Ulm. From 1967 to 1987, he was a professor of architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 1982, he became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1984, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Stuttgart. In 1989, he founded the Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner studio in Stuttgart with his son Stefan. In 1996, he was a founding member of the Saxon Academy of Arts, where he headed the architecture department until 2000.
