Prostějov - The Prostějov city hall will demolish abandoned buildings in the area of the former cavalry barracks, which have been empty for a long time and attract homeless people. The demolition is expected to cost around 13.4 million crowns, said Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Fišer (ČSSD) to reporters today.
"For a long time, residents have been voicing concerns that there is a lot of disorder in the area of the cavalry barracks and undesirable elements have settled there. Even though we occasionally board up windows and doors, the situation continues to repeat itself," Fišer justified the decision to demolish the barracks.
The demolition should start this year and continue next year. Fišer believes that, due to the public tender, the final price of this contract could be lower than the city hall currently estimates.
"The land is owned by the city, and according to the zoning plan, it can be designated for civic amenities. For now, it will be an open space that will be prepared for subsequent construction," said Fišer, who indicated that the new council, resulting from the autumn elections, will decide on the use of the area.
The city hall previously considered building a new multifunctional center on the site of the cavalry barracks to replace the old community center, the demolition of which has not yet been decided.
The cavalry barracks were built in Prostějov at the end of the 19th century. Initially, they housed a cavalry regiment, which was later replaced by a radar unit. In the 1990s, the army abandoned the barracks, and they have been deteriorating ever since. The barracks complex included 13 buildings. The area also features a dining hall, a storage facility, and a vehicle fleet.
