After graduating in architecture from the University of Illinois in 1938, he moved to California, where he, along with his brother Hal, worked on designing film sets. After World War II, he taught at the University of Southern California. He is the author of visionary buildings such as the Theme Building at LAX Airport (1961), the Transamerica Pyramid skyscraper in San Francisco (1972), and the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego (1970).
