Friends-clients bought a small attic apartment after renovation in Prague Bubeneč. Everything was "almost" fine, except that the apartment lacked a Soul and was functionally unsuitable for a family of three with a dog. We decided to look at the apartment's interior with "new eyes," both functionally and materially.
The request for a second bathroom, a separate bedroom, plenty of storage space, and another "room" altogether, completely predetermined the limits of our thinking.
We wanted to create a bright and airy space, so we measured every centimeter. We opened all areas up to the roof. We created a separate bedroom, two bathrooms, and built-in wardrobes of various depths, which carry a sleeping loft above the kitchen. We chose colored MDF in a gray-blue hue with a visible fiber structure as the main material, the shades of which change throughout the day depending on the chromaticity of the light. Daylight tints the material into cool blue-gray tones, while the warmer evening light shifts it to purple shades. An interesting aspect of MDF (including colored) is that it is color-homogeneous throughout the cut, so it has no back or face and can be milled. Due to the apartment's west orientation, some areas are shadowy, so we made them in a white homogeneous color identical to the shade of white paint. Another topic was the doors. This modernist building has very nice details, including in the common areas, and the handles for the original apartments are among them. We visited our neighbors and purchased two handles, measured the period doors, and made replicas. The idea was to invite something from the old story of the house here while simultaneously allowing the new to resonate alongside it. Quality oak floor and retro furniture sing the same song. Over time, while furnishing, it became clear that the interior benefited from accents of bright colors. Joyful work.
PS: After years, it turned out that when the beloved MDF, which is exposed to a humid environment, has its edge chipped, it swells and degrades. These small areas ultimately needed to be replaced with white laminate. Where it is dry, everything is fine.
