Reconstruction of a three-room apartment

Room K49
Architect: Eugen Kullman
Project:6.2018
Completion:5.2019
Area:80 m2

Reconstruction of a classic three-bedroom apartment from the 1950s, located on a busy street in the center of the Old Town, brings a new perspective on living. The goal was to create a space that combines the needs of a young family for modern living while preserving the dominant features of the original apartment. Thanks to the extensive reconstruction and skeletal load-bearing system, it was possible to completely open up the apartment space and functionally divide it into day and night areas, considering the brightness and airiness that the apartment originally lacked.
Unlike classic reconstructions, where the layout of the apartment is made up of individual rooms dividing the apartment into zones, in this case, we enter an open space without dividing doors or walls. At first glance, the rawness of the original concrete, in the form of exposed load-bearing beams, or the refurbished original cast iron radiators, strikingly contrasts with the graceful and subtle tones of natural materials running throughout the apartment's interior. The newly reconstructed apartment of just under 80 m² is defined by two furniture fragments that clearly divide it into functional units. Hidden sliding furniture doors allow the large space to be divided into separate zones, providing perfect privacy for each household member. The effective use of storage space gives the apartment a sense of refinement and elegance, further enhanced by details such as recessed unobtrusive ceiling lights, the choice of tiles behind the kitchen counter and in the bathroom, or flowing curtains.
