House in Nebušice

House in Nebušice
It is easier, cheaper, and faster to start building a new house from scratch. So why does someone embark on the renovation of an old house in the middle of a village? A house without a foundation, a house with a leaking roof, and in quite a dilapidated condition. But also a renovation of a house with something that cannot be built. A house with history. A house that respects the street line. A house that doesn't shout, yet can still captivate. A house designed according to a "typical" project, built according to the possibilities of its time, yet full of character. This house is not perfect; it has many flaws. And that is what makes this house true. I believe that truth is an expression of beauty. And for this beauty, it is worth embarking on a thornier path and making this house a new home. A home for people for whom truth is beautiful.
The central theme of the design is the extension. An extension of a rectangular form with minimalist features, a wooden façade, and a large glazed wall facing the garden. This contrasts with the heritage conservation approach applied to the renovated house. The new windows mimic the original ones. The façade retains stucco, for which we used internal insulation.
On the roof is a beaver tail. We reveal the original beam ceiling. We restore the metal Art Nouveau railing. All of this is right next to the modern extension. Inside, we find concrete, built-in wardrobes, and a kitchen in the form of an island that faces the garden.
We newly utilize the attic of the house. It contains children's rooms and a bathroom. In the rooms, we expose the full height of the roof structure and illuminate them with roof windows facing the garden. The bathroom has a new dormer.
Contrast. New next to old. Colorful next to gray. Clean next to ornate. Perfect next to natural. Obvious next to unexpected. Contrast is the theme of this house. Harmony is then the longing of the space.
