The assignment for the project was to create two identical buildings with nine small-scale (starter) apartments for a small town in northeastern Bohemia.
In designing the houses, I determined as an important theme the preservation of continuous contact between the residents of the houses and the greenery they are accustomed to from the surrounding landscape. Therefore, the main task of the design was to leave as much of the small plot as possible for private greenery, which would be an ideal place for active relaxation for the residents. In the house, one of the apartments always has an entrance directly to the ground. Other residents can use the light suspended balconies, separated from the living halls by glass walls, which eliminate the barrier between the interior and the "green" exterior, as well as the roof terraces, which offer privacy for sitting, sunbathing, and even drying laundry.
The fully utilized area of the plot for outdoor activities shifts the volumes of private spaces of the houses upwards. The masses of the buildings seem to levitate, creating a certain tension. This levitation symbolically reflects the very tension of creation and destruction... This cycle, functioning on the principle of chaos, is illustrated by the irregularly segmented masses of the houses. The openings of the house shells seem to direct upwards, which is enhanced by the angled masses of the entrances to the roof terraces. The imaginary spiral flow is drawn to the central axis that lifts it upwards. The association of the spiral was evoked by the designation of the apartments in the assignment as "starter." The axis of this spiral represents order...
A striking component of the design of the buildings is the color scheme. The smooth facades of the houses are monochromatic, the right house is gray and the left is dark brown. This is not the only difference between the two houses; they also differ in the arrangement of the openings, which emphasizes the individuality of the apartment residents. The backbone of the buildings consists of vividly colored stairwell spaces, resembling chimneys with their top lighting.
