A new photographic studio has been created from an unused storage space in one of the buildings of the Secondary School of Design in Lysá nad Labem. The classroom is designed to facilitate comprehensive instruction from taking photographs to their post-production.
The interior design reflects the industrial origin of the art school building. It retains valuable structural elements of the building while also incorporating new parts that sensitively interact with the original architecture. A space is created that in itself helps to develop the artistic perception of design students.
The original generous structural system, consisting of a raised reinforced concrete skeleton covered by ribbed panels, allowed the classroom to be divided into three functional zones – a working zone, a storage area for photographic equipment, and a built-in loft where students process the photographs they have taken.
The centerpiece of the design is the steel structure of the mezzanine with a spiral staircase and railings made of stainless steel mesh, which, along with the original architectural elements, creates a delicate, technically precise structure. The original profiling of the ribbed ceiling is preserved and subtly supplemented with square acoustic panels inserted into individual cells.
A steel frame is suspended under the ceiling, along which lights and softboxes can be moved in the studio's working zone.
The chosen color scheme meets the needs of school instruction and photographic work while also dividing the space into individual zones. The steel structures, as well as the furniture, are unified by black color. The walls and ceiling are finished to achieve the required degree of reflectivity in white, while the floor is covered with a grey polyurethane screed.
Lighting in the classroom is ensured by a combination of natural and artificial light. The working space of the built-in loft is illuminated by a window in the gable wall and a roof skylight. Both openings can be completely darkened with the help of blinds. The artificial lighting of the working area meets hygiene requirements for teaching spaces with combined lighting and also meets the requirements of professional photographic work in terms of color rendering index and overall maximum light intensity.
