Lužec nad Vltavou is a village near Mělník in the picturesque floodplain landscape of the Vltava River. Since 1907, when a lateral canal was built between the villages of Hořín and Vraňany, it has been the only municipality in the Czech Republic that lies entirely on an island. The island is also the largest island on the Vltava River.
The footbridge is led across the non-navigable stream of the river between the villages of Lužec nad Vltavou and Bukol. It carries the long-distance north-south cycling route EuroVelo 7, which runs from Sweden to Sicily.
The architectural design is artistically based on lightness and subtlety, made possible by the technologically advanced material UHPFRC (ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete).
The footbridge is conceived as a suspended structure with one pylon and two spans of 30+100 m. The main span crosses the river, which is 70 m wide. The pylon is steel, 40 m tall, and serves as a counterbalance to the church tower in the flat landscape. The deck is designed in a vertical arc with a radius of 777 m and is made up of directly walkable prefabricated elements of UHPFRC. The suspensions consist of 17 pairs of locked steel cables. The deck was assembled above the banks on a fixed formwork. The part above the river was erected in a cantilever manner. The deck is connected by two free cables.
All structural elements are unified in color and dematerialized in tones of medium gray.
The footbridge is integrated into the landscape with a newly planted oak avenue along the path on the Bukol side. The oaks will grow to the height of the pylon.
