Duplex apartment in Brno

Duplex apartment in Brno
The apartment is located in an older building in Brno, not far from the brewery. Originally, it offered small apartments likely intended for brewery employees. One of the previous owners combined two apartments on top of each other into one larger duplex. This existing state is how our client purchased the apartment.
Previous construction interventions required the connection of both floors with an internal staircase, which unfortunately was oriented somewhat awkwardly with the exit facing the windows. The original layout thus featured a living room with a kitchen and a toilet on the first floor, and two through bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor.
The most important point of the renovation was the change in the orientation of the existing staircase. The exit on the second floor allowed for the creation of a corridor leading to two bedrooms and a bathroom. The space above the stairs was used as a raised bed custom-made by a carpenter. The last layout adjustment was the creation of a hallway on the first floor. A glass block wall semi-transparently separated the coat hooks from the kitchen. Next, the flooring throughout the apartment was replaced, along with new tiles in the existing toilet and, of course, in the new bathroom.
The staircase plays a central role here; therefore, attention was also paid to it during the interior furnishing. Space had to be used wisely wherever possible, and thus the area under the stairs on the first floor was utilized with a built-in sofa with a storage box, which also filled the semicircular niche. The atypical sofa is followed by a railing with a stylized grid, whose nearly molecular structure refers to the scientific profession of the owner. On the first floor, the space above the stairs is utilized with the aforementioned bed. Above, there are a couple of shelves instead of a nightstand. The kitchen unit left by the original owners currently serves its purpose and will likely be replaced with a new one in the future.
The bathroom on the second floor is tiled with mosaic featuring a circular decor, alternating between white and dark blue areas. A small decor of blue circles is incorporated into the white area, which skilled craftsmen placed according to our design.
The overall solution of the apartment provided a more practical layout and enough space for the placement of many books, plants, souvenirs from travels, and gifts from family and friends that surround the owners.
